By Ayomide Otitoju

Globacom has concluded its sponsorship of the 2026 Ofala Festival in Onitsha with a royal banquet in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.

The event, held on Wednesday, was attended by the monarch, members of his cabinet, Globacom’s trade partners and high-net-worth customers, marking the grand finale of the festival.

Speaking at the banquet, Globacom’s Divisional Head, South-East, Mike Ehumadu, said the occasion highlighted the importance of partnerships between corporate organisations and traditional institutions in preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

He congratulated Igwe Achebe, the Ofala Festival organising committee and the people of Onitsha on the successful celebration of the 2026 edition.

Ehumadu reaffirmed Globacom’s commitment to initiatives that celebrate Nigeria’s cultural diversity, strengthen community ties and promote the country’s heritage to a wider international audience.

The evening featured music, comedy and cultural entertainment, with performances by Aniweta Mazeli, Boy o Boy and the Groove Band. Comedian MC Ezegetive also entertained guests, adding to the festivities.

In recognition of the competitive spirit and communal solidarity demonstrated by Onitsha’s age-grade associations, Globacom presented cash prizes and trophies to winners of various competitions.

The company also distributed hundreds of bags of special Basmati rice to members of the different age-grade associations, acknowledging their contributions to the festival and the preservation of the Ofala tradition.

Globacom’s continued sponsorship of the festival reflects the role of private-sector investment in preserving cultural heritage while supporting community engagement and the social and economic benefits associated with traditional celebrations.
