Italy will miss a third consecutive FIFA World Cup after suffering a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tuesday’s qualification play-off final in Zenica.
Esmir Bajraktarevic converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Bosnia’s place in Group B of the tournament, where they will face co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.
Four-time world champions Italy had taken an early lead through Moise Kean in the 15th minute but lost momentum after being reduced to 10 men. Alessandro Bastoni was sent off just before halftime for a challenge on Amar Memic.
Bosnia capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Haris Tabakovic scoring a late equaliser in the 79th minute to force extra time.
The match was ultimately decided on penalties, where Italy faltered. Pio Esposito missed their opening attempt, while Bryan Cristante struck the crossbar. Bajraktarevic’s successful effort, squeezed beneath goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, sealed the result.
The defeat marks a historic low for Italy, who become the first World Cup winners to miss three consecutive editions of the tournament, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the victory secures only their second World Cup appearance, and their first since 2014, sparking celebrations among home supporters.
