The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, has adopted Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
GAC Chairman Tajudeen Olusi announced the decision on Tuesday after a meeting of party leaders at Lagos House, Marina, stating that all 21 members present agreed to back Hamzat’s candidacy.
Olusi said the decision was reached under the party’s consensus arrangement, which allows for internal agreement alongside primaries. He described the move as one aimed at promoting unity and stability within the party.
“Following this option, we have adopted, we have all agreed that Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor of our state, is the consensus candidate of our party,” he said.
Following the announcement, Olusi and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu raised Hamzat’s hand in a symbolic endorsement, drawing applause from attendees.
Sanwo-Olu also revealed that party leaders had collectively agreed to finance Hamzat’s governorship nomination form, describing the gesture as a show of personal commitment from stakeholders.
He added that similar support had previously been extended by the party for President Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition.
The GAC, established in 1999, serves as the apex advisory and decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, overseeing succession planning, key appointments, and political zoning arrangements.
Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2023, has in recent days received endorsements from several political stakeholders across the state.
