The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with its development partners, has emphasized the importance of comprehensive data collection to promote equity and resilience in the face of population growth and sustainable development challenges.
This call was made during a forum organized by the Lagos Bureau of Statistics, under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, to mark the 2024 World Population Day. The event, themed “Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All,” took place at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday.
World Population Day, observed annually on July 11, highlights the significance of data-driven solutions. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that “investing in data collection is essential for understanding problems, tailoring solutions, and driving progress.”
The forum, attended by representatives from the National Population Commission (NPC), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, Lagos State Civil Society Partnership (LACSOP), and academicians, underscored the need for inclusive, fair, and robust data systems to navigate challenges effectively.
In his opening address, Mr. Emmanuel Olajide, Coordinating Director of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, stated, “In a world where data drives decision-making, it is crucial that we prioritize inclusivity to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and valued.”
He urged stakeholders to harness the potential of inclusive data to break down barriers, inform policy decisions, and promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and global collaboration, adding that “empowering women and communities is key to sustainable population growth.”
Dr. Omolaso Omosehin, former Head of the Lagos Liaison Office of UNFPA, guided attendees through vital processes for effective data collection and analysis, stressing that data-driven approaches are essential for inclusive development and resilience. He reiterated that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 requires a commitment to ensuring no one is left behind.
Mr. Bamidele Sadiku, Lagos State Director of the NPC, highlighted the commission’s readiness to conduct a national census, with demonstration exercises already completed in parts of the country. He assured that all institutions, including hospitals, prisons, and even transient populations, would be accounted for using advanced technology. “Inclusiveness will be the core of the census, covering regular and institutional households, market places, motor parks, and even homeless individuals,” he stated.
UNFPA Nigeria’s representative, Josephine Ekhator, reaffirmed the agency’s support for Lagos State in using inclusive data for informed decision-making, policies, and projects that prioritize equity and fairness for all.
