Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed the state’s readiness to host the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival scheduled for October 1 to 15.
Sanwo-Olu spoke on Saturday during an inspection of ongoing rehabilitation works at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, one of the venues being prepared for the event.
The governor said Lagos accepted the hosting rights after they were awarded to the state by the National Sports Commission, describing the festival as an opportunity to strengthen grassroots sports development and encourage young athletes to pursue their careers in Nigeria.
He said between 14,000 and 15,000 athletes were expected to participate, with Rowe Park and other sporting facilities across the state also expected to serve as venues.
During the inspection, Sanwo-Olu toured the main football and athletics arenas, indoor sports hall, volleyball court and swimming pool.
He said the rehabilitation of sports facilities across Lagos was part of a broader plan launched by his administration about three years ago to upgrade sporting infrastructure in Surulere, Ifako, Bagada, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege and Badagry.
The governor said the main bowl of the Teslim Balogun Stadium was undergoing major reconstruction, with the football pitch being upgraded to meet FIFA standards and natural grass already installed.
He added that work on the tartan track was expected to be completed within four to six weeks.
Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that the stadium and other venues would be ready and meet the required standards before the October festival.
He also assured that work on the swimming pool and other outstanding facilities would be completed within the timeframe.
The governor said Lagos’ selection as the host had increased the urgency to complete the rehabilitation projects and deliver facilities capable of supporting a successful national sporting event.
Sanwo-Olu described the festival as an important platform for identifying and developing young sporting talents before they progress to elite competition.
He said the event would help strengthen grassroots sports while giving young athletes opportunities to develop their abilities and remain committed to building their careers in Nigeria.
