The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning Lagos as a hub of resilience, opportunity, and enterprise as the city prepares to host the inaugural E1 Lagos GP, scheduled for October 3–5 on the waterways of Victoria Island.
Speaking at the E1 Lagos GP Immersion Session held at the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Boat Jetty in Falomo, Ikoyi, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, described Lagos as a city of innovation that constantly reinvents itself.
He said the E1 Lagos GP goes beyond sports, representing a “scientific demonstration of precision, accuracy, and sustainability.” According to him, the excitement building around the event reflects Lagos’ creativity and global potential.
“This is more than putting race boats on the water. Everything about it requires science, careful planning, and accuracy. It shows that it is serious business for Lagos. It is about sustainability, creativity, and responsibility. Lagos is indeed the city of now and the city of the future,” Omotoso said.
He urged residents to take ownership of their environment, stressing the importance of keeping the city’s lagoons clean as visitors arrive for the global showcase.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr. Sam Egube, noted that the event highlights Lagos’ growing reputation as Africa’s hub for technology, culture, and enterprise. He said beyond the competition, the E1 Lagos GP would spotlight the city’s readiness to host world-class experiences and strengthen its role in cultural diplomacy.
“The world is beginning to recognise Lagos for what it truly is—a resilient city with untapped potential. Investors see this, and that is why Lagos remains at the forefront of conversations about Africa’s future,” Egube added.
General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, assured participants that comprehensive measures are being implemented to ensure safety and smooth operations. He confirmed that the Navy, Marine Police, and other security agencies have been mobilised, while “shakedown sessions” will precede the main event to allow competitors to test their boats.
Corporate partners, including First Bank of Nigeria and Tolaram Group, expressed pride in supporting what they described as a “historic first” for Africa. They emphasised that the E1 Lagos GP symbolises growth, energy, and global recognition.
The electric boat race will feature seven contests, with winners earning 25 points for first place, 15 for second, and 10 for third. The scoring system is expected to heighten competition and fan engagement.
Viewing centres will be set up at the Boat Club Opening Point of Contact, Wing Jetty, Mikano Building, and LASWA headquarters to allow residents to follow the event in real time.
With millions expected to tune in worldwide, the E1 Lagos GP is set to showcase Lagos’ waterways as drivers of tourism, urban renewal, and sustainable development—further cementing the city’s reputation as a global destination.
