The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure and traffic diversion for emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, affecting the inbound Marina/CMS route. The repairs will last for two months, from Wednesday, March 19, to Monday, May 26, 2025.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed that the affected section of the road, spanning from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge, will be closed to vehicular movement.
“Similarly, the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane inbound Independence Bridge will not be available for motorists. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open to traffic,” the statement read.
To manage the impact of the closure, alternative routes have been provided. Motorists traveling from Ahmadu Bello Way to Victoria Island are advised to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue via Akin Adesola Street, then proceed to Falomo Roundabout and link Obafemi Awolowo Road to access Ring Road.
Those heading to the Third Mainland Bridge should take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, then connect to Alfred Rewane Road, Osborne Road, and Ring Road. Meanwhile, motorists traveling to Inner Marina and CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way will be diverted through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and Obafemi Awolowo Road, linking J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.
Osiyemi assured Lagos residents that traffic flow will be closely monitored by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) throughout the duration of the repair works.
