The Lagos State government has announced the release of Africa’s first technology and artificial intelligence-themed feature film, Makemation, set to premiere in cinemas across Nigeria on Easter Weekend, April 18, 2025.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on Sunday, describing the film as a landmark production that highlights the transformative power of AI and technology in the hands of young Africans, particularly girls.
A coming-of-age drama, Makemation follows the journey of a brilliant and determined young girl from a low-income Lagos community as she navigates hardship while leveraging AI-driven innovations to tackle pressing societal challenges.
“The film is a thought-provoking, emotional, and humorous exploration of resilience, innovation, and hope,” Sanwo-Olu stated in a social media post.
The governor emphasized that Lagos has prioritized the creative industry’s growth and sees technological storytelling as a means to drive economic development.
“By supporting initiatives like this, we aim to showcase our talented filmmakers and artists while highlighting technology’s immense potential in storytelling,” he said.
The film stars Nollywood icons Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tony Umez, Shaffy Bello, Ibrahim Chatta, Toyin Afolayan, and Ali Nuhu. It delves into the intersection of human experiences and artificial intelligence, reinforcing the role of innovation in shaping Africa’s future.
