The family of Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has disclosed that his father, Jorge Messi, is recovering from an undisclosed health condition, appealing for privacy amid growing media speculation surrounding his wellbeing.
In a statement released on Thursday, the family confirmed that the 68-year-old is under medical supervision and responding positively to treatment, but did not provide further details about the nature of his illness.
“Jorge Messi is currently under medical supervision, recovering and progressing favourably given his condition,” the statement said.
The update comes after widespread speculation intensified following Lionel Messi’s emotional reaction during Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria at the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner broke down in tears after scoring the first of his three goals in the match.
Speaking after the game, Messi hinted that personal circumstances had contributed to his emotional response.
“It was a matter unrelated to sports. I went through some difficult and complicated days,” he told reporters.
Jorge Messi, who serves as his son’s agent and one of his closest advisers, has played a central role throughout the footballer’s career, supporting him during his time at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and with the Argentine national team.
In its statement, the Messi family criticised what it described as insensitive media coverage of a private family matter.
“We ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity. A person’s health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention,” the family said.
The family also expressed concern over what it called a lack of respect and sensitivity in the handling of reports surrounding Jorge Messi’s health, urging the public and media to respect their privacy during the recovery period.
