In a significant blow to banditry in Zamfara State, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the elimination of several top bandit commanders in a series of airstrikes. The strikes, carried out in collaboration with ground troops under Operation Fansan Yamma, left scores of bandits dead and many others injured, according to a statement released on Sunday by Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information.
While the exact number of casualties was not disclosed, Akinboyewa confirmed that the bandits targeted were loyal to the notorious leader, Kachallah Bello Turji. Despite the heavy losses inflicted on his network, Turji’s whereabouts remain unknown.
“Scores of bandits were neutralized, while many others, including top commanders, sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Akinboyewa stated. “The airstrikes have added significant pressure on Turji’s crumbling network.”
The operation, described as a well-coordinated air-ground assault, involved real-time coordination via an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform to ensure precision targeting. Bandits attempting to flee eastward were intercepted and neutralized with follow-up engagements using rockets and cannons.
Local intelligence confirmed the devastating impact of the strikes, which have been met with widespread relief among Zamfara residents. The operation also resulted in the rescue of several kidnapped victims, bringing renewed hope to families affected by banditry in the region.
“The identified targets were swiftly engaged, delivering devastating blows to the enemy,” Akinboyewa added. “This success underscores the armed forces’ unwavering resolve to restore peace and security to the region.”
The NAF spokesperson reiterated the military’s commitment to working with ground forces to eradicate criminal elements across the country.
“The Nigerian Air Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains steadfast in its mission to defeat all threats to the security and well-being of our people. Together, we will pave the way for lasting peace and prosperity in our great nation,” Akinboyewa said.
The recent strikes have been hailed as a significant victory in the fight against banditry, with many locals expressing gratitude for the efforts of the military in reclaiming their communities.
