The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities have announced an indefinite strike effective May 1, 2026, citing stalled negotiations with the Federal Government over outstanding allowances.
In a joint letter dated April 30 and addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the unions said the industrial action would commence at midnight.
The unions stated that the decision followed the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations or present a new offer on allowances before the April 30 deadline.
While acknowledging the withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 per cent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance, the unions noted that no alternative proposal had been made to address their core demands.
They expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of negotiations, describing it as inadequate to meet their expectations, and said members had mandated their leadership to act if discussions were not concluded by the set deadline.
According to the unions, the strike became inevitable due to what they described as the Federal Government’s inability to resolve the dispute through meaningful engagement.
They added that the action would be total and comprehensive, involving all members nationwide until their demands are addressed.
