Nigerian Christians joined their counterparts across the world on Friday to mark Good Friday, a solemn day in the Christian calendar commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
Observed annually on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, Good Friday is dedicated to reflecting on the sacrifice of Christ, who Christians believe was crucified, died for the sins of humanity, and rose on the third day to conquer sin and death. Since the early days of Christianity, the day has been observed as one of sorrow, repentance, and fasting.
While the day is marked with solemnity, it is part of the Easter weekend—considered the most significant period in Christianity. Across Nigeria, many Christians attended church services, engaged in fasting, or adopted a subdued atmosphere at home to reflect the gravity of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. Some chose to abstain from eating red meat as a symbolic gesture in remembrance of the blood Christ shed on the cross.
In recognition of the importance of the occasion, the Federal Government declared both Good Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended Easter greetings to Christians in Nigeria and around the world, acknowledging the spiritual significance of Christ’s death and resurrection as the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
In his Easter message, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the patience and resilience of Nigerians amid ongoing economic challenges. “We understand the economic challenges many of you are facing, and we are working tirelessly to restore investor confidence, stabilise key sectors, and build an inclusive economy that serves the interests of all Nigerians,” he said.
He also thanked God for the recovery of Pope Francis and expressed hope that the pontiff’s renewed strength would continue to inspire his leadership and global service.
Encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, President Tinubu stated: “Just as Christ triumphed over death, so too shall our country triumph over every challenge we face. The present moment may be cloudy, but it will usher in a glorious day.”
He called on citizens to remain steadfast in the collective pursuit of national progress. “The task before us is enormous, but together, with faith and determination, there is no obstacle we cannot overcome. Our unity and resilience are our greatest strengths,” he added.
The president concluded by praying for peace in Nigerian homes and continued unity and prosperity for the nation.
