The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators to the party, declaring that no form of intimidation or political pressure would compel them to defect.
Moro made the declaration during a consultative meeting with the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, led by the party’s National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.
He said all remaining senators elected on the platform of the PDP at the National Assembly remain firmly rooted in the party, despite what he described as sustained attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to lure opposition lawmakers.
Addressing NWC members and party stakeholders, Moro maintained that the PDP remains the only credible platform for genuine democratic governance in Nigeria, regardless of the challenges currently confronting the opposition.
“I want to inform you, Mr Chairman, that many of us here are not poor or desperate politicians. We are in PDP to stay. We are not in PDP merely to use the platform to win elections, and certainly not because of fixation on the 2027 elections. No amount of intimidating scenarios will push us out of the PDP,” Moro said.
He urged the newly elected NWC members to work closely with party leaders across all levels to strengthen unity and restore cohesion within the party.
“The National Convention has come and gone. This responsibility now rests on us, particularly you, Mr Chairman, and other members of the NWC, to salvage the situation. Yours is indeed a very herculean task,” he added.
Responding, PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki thanked the senators for honouring the invitation despite their legislative engagements and commended their continued engagement with the party leadership.
Turaki said the senators had consistently contributed ideas and strategies aimed at repositioning the PDP and strengthening Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
“Our goal is to save this country from anti-democratic forces and to salvage our multiparty democracy. The 2027 general elections are not about defections; they are about Nigerians,” he said.
The PDP chairman further praised Senator Moro and his colleagues for what he described as their principled and steadfast loyalty to the party, referring to them as “pillars of the PDP” whose conduct should inspire other members during what he called a critical period for Nigeria’s democracy.
Those present at the meeting included Senator Abba Moro; the Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi; former National Organising Secretary, Senator Austin Akobundu; other PDP senators; and members of the National Working Committee.
