Calls for power rotation to Ogun West are gaining momentum as political stakeholders in the state intensify campaigns ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Since Ogun State was created in 1976, the governorship seat has alternated between Ogun East and Ogun Central, with no candidate from Ogun West ever emerging as governor. Past leaders include Chief Olabisi Onabanjo (Ogun East), Chief Olusegun Osoba (Ogun Central), Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun Central), and the incumbent, Prince Dapo Abiodun (Ogun East).
Advocates of power shift argue that 2027 presents an opportunity to correct what they describe as decades of marginalization of Ogun West. Among the prominent figures being promoted for the role is Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as YAYI.
Supporters highlight several reasons why they believe Adeola should be considered:
Equity and Justice: Proponents insist that fairness demands Ogun West be given the chance to produce the next governor after over 50 years of waiting.
Legislative Record: Adeola is credited with a track record of empowerment programs and infrastructural interventions in both Lagos and Ogun States.
Grassroots Presence: His influence is said to extend to community development associations, markets, and schools across the state.
Human Capital Development: Supporters point to his scholarships, support for artisans, and youth empowerment initiatives.
Pan-Ogun Appeal: Though from Ogun West, Adeola is noted for projects that cut across Ogun East and Central, giving him wider acceptance.
Experience: Having served in Lagos politics and currently as a senator, Adeola is seen as equipped with the capacity and networks to attract investments.
Vision: His agenda, according to campaigners, focuses on industrial growth, youth empowerment, agricultural development, and inclusive governance.
Stakeholders from Ogun West maintain that the 2027 election should be about equity and inclusiveness, insisting that the district’s time to lead has come.
