The State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have unanimously expressed support for the National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of the party’s National Chairman, Dr Tanimu Turaki, SAN.
The declaration was made during an interactive meeting held on Wednesday, December 10, at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, where the chairmen pledged to work collectively to ensure stability, unity and success of the party under the current leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen’s Forum and Chairman of the Edo State chapter, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, said the NWC, led by Turaki, had shown strong commitment to internal democracy and the rebuilding of the party.
“We are here today to send a clear message: we are solidly behind the Tanimu Turaki-led PDP NWC,” Aziegbemi said.
He acknowledged the challenges facing the party but noted that the NWC had demonstrated unwavering dedication to upholding the PDP constitution and positioning the party for future electoral success.
The state chairmen stressed the need for unity and cohesion within the party, condemning actions or statements capable of destabilising the PDP. They emphasised that a united party remains critical to its role as a viable opposition and credible alternative for Nigerians.
The chairmen also commended the NWC for initiating programmes aimed at strengthening party structures at all levels and ensuring that internal processes, including congresses, are conducted in line with the party’s constitution.
They urged all PDP stakeholders to set aside personal differences and rally behind the NWC to enable it focus on preparations for the next electoral cycle.
“Our focus must remain on the Nigerian people. The PDP is a democratic institution, and we must allow its constituted organs, especially the National Working Committee, to carry out their responsibilities without undue pressure,” Aziegbemi added.
The meeting ended with a renewed pledge of loyalty by the state chairmen, who reaffirmed their commitment to partnering with the NWC to reposition the party. A total of 27 state chairmen, out of the 36 states and the FCT, were present at the meeting.
