The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye over accusations of anti-party activities. Melaye, who once served as chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was suspended by the PDP executives in his Ayetoro Gbede Ward 1 after he failed to respond to a summons.
The resolution to suspend him was signed on Thursday by the Ward Chairman, Abayomi Osamika, and the Ward Secretary, Yodson Dayo. The suspension followed a meeting of the Ward party executive committee in Aiyetoro/Luagba Ward 1, where they discussed Melaye’s alleged misconduct.
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable,” the statement from the Ward Exco read.
The suspension is in line with Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers local party executives to take disciplinary action against members accused of wrongdoing. The Ward Party Executive Committee had set up a disciplinary panel to investigate the allegations against Melaye, but he failed to appear before the committee after being invited on August 20, 2024.
The Ward Exco emphasized that Melaye’s absence showed gross disrespect for the party and its leadership, concluding that his actions were in violation of the party’s constitution. The suspension takes effect immediately.
