Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s decision to mark the 2024 Democracy Day at the National Assembly Complex, calling it a powerful endorsement of democratic institutions.
Speaking during a joint session of the 10th National Assembly on Wednesday, Saraki described the venue choice as “symbolic,” stating that it reaffirms the central role of the legislature in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
“Among the three arms of government, it is the parliament that best represents democracy,” Saraki said in remarks he had prepared but could not fully deliver due to time constraints. “Today’s gathering confirms that the legislature is the bedrock of our democratic system.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, Saraki paid tribute to both prominent and unsung heroes of the country’s democratic struggle. He also acknowledged the recent restoration of his portrait in the Senate Gallery, thanking Senate President Godswill Akpabio for the gesture.
Saraki criticized the weakening of legislative independence, citing undue interference by the executive and judiciary. He warned that the National Assembly was “becoming a shadow of what a vibrant and effective parliament should be.”
He called for reforms to make the Assembly more inclusive, urging lawmakers to embrace diverse opinions and enhance youth and women participation in governance.
“In a true democracy, the majority may have their way, but the minority must have their say,” Saraki emphasized, adding that failure to reflect public sentiment could jeopardize Nigeria’s democratic gains.
