Transmission Company of Nigeria has declared a force majeure on the Ikeja West–Osogbo 330kV transmission line following storm-related damage that disrupted operations on Thursday, April 16.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the company said the incident was triggered by a severe rainstorm that caused a fault along the line, traced to a point about 14.9 kilometres from the Ikeja West (Ayobo) end. Further inspection revealed that Tower 515 collapsed at its midsection during the storm.
The TCN said its maintenance teams are already on site dismantling the damaged structure, while materials and personnel are being mobilised for reconstruction. It added that restoration efforts are ongoing to ensure stability along the corridor, noting that an alternative transmission line remains in operation to maintain bulk power evacuation.
“We assure that we will work assiduously to restore flexibility and redundancy in that corridor,” the company said, adding that updates will be provided as work progresses.
In a related development, the company announced the energisation of two newly installed 60MVA 132/33kV transformers at the Apapa Road Transmission Substation in Lagos.
The upgrade, carried out by TCN’s Lagos Region, also included the installation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) at the rehabilitated facility. The expansion increases the substation’s capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.
According to the company, the project—funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency—is expected to improve electricity supply to customers under the Eko Electricity Distribution Company network, covering Apapa, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, Tin Can Island, and surrounding areas.
TCN said the project will be officially commissioned at a later date.
