President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion special take-off grant.
The approval was disclosed on Monday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the intervention aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy based in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
The new funding, to be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2026 allocation, will support the development of key infrastructure, academic facilities, student
accommodation, and training equipment.
The siting of the Erinja campus was reportedly recommended by a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The meeting considered factors including admission capacity, funding requirements, academic quality assurance, and the manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force amid ongoing recruitment efforts.
President Tinubu was quoted as saying the expansion would strengthen policing education, institutional governance, and national security.
The development comes months after the President declared a nationwide security emergency and approved increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force in response to rising cases of insecurity, including attacks and kidnappings.
As part of earlier reforms, Tinubu had also approved the upgrade of police training facilities nationwide and the use of selected National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as training depots.
He also ordered the withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection duties, directing that affected personnel undergo “crash training” to enhance operational efficiency in security-challenged areas.
