Donald Trump will have his image featured in a limited-edition United States passport, officials confirmed on Tuesday, marking a significant departure from longstanding government norms.
The United States Department of State said the special passport design is part of activities to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
According to officials, the commemorative passports will include Trump’s official photograph superimposed on the Declaration of Independence, along with his signature in gold. The initiative was disclosed following reports by Fox News and The Bulwark.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the passports would be released in limited quantities in Washington, D.C., and made available at no additional cost, subject to availability.
The move represents a rare precedent in modern democracies, where passports typically feature historical figures, landmarks, or national symbols rather than images of sitting leaders. Current U.S. passports include depictions of events such as the Apollo moon landing and iconic sites like the Statue of Liberty.
Since returning to office, Trump has increasingly incorporated his name and image into government institutions, including the display of presidential banners on federal buildings and the addition of his name to prominent cultural and policy institutions.
In a related development, the U.S. Treasury Department recently announced plans to include Trump’s signature on U.S. currency, another break from tradition.
In contrast, countries such as the United Kingdom feature the likeness of King Charles III on their currency, reflecting his ceremonial role as head of state without direct political authority.
