The leadership of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Monday called for urgent measures to ease the impact of rising inflation on workers, urging governments to increase allowances and enhance social welfare packages.
In a statement issued by TUC President Festus Osifo and General Secretary Nuhu Toro, the union highlighted the “harsh economic realities confronting workers” as the country enters 2026. It urged federal, state, and local governments to review and boost allowances as a temporary relief ahead of the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027, in accordance with the Labour Act.
The statement also appealed to workers to remain united and committed to strengthening the labour movement. “Nigerian workers must not be left to shoulder the burden of economic reforms without adequate protection and support,” it said.
TUC reiterated its commitment to engaging governments and employers on policies that protect workers’ interests. “Together, we shall continue to build a labour movement that stands firmly for workers and for Nigeria,” the union added.
