UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Downing Street on Saturday, a day after Zelensky’s heated clash with U.S. President Donald Trump.
As Zelensky’s convoy arrived, supporters gathered outside, cheering in solidarity. Starmer embraced the Ukrainian leader before escorting him into his official residence for closed-door talks.
“You are very, very welcome here in Downing Street,” Starmer told Zelensky. “As you heard from the cheers outside, you have the full backing of the United Kingdom, and we stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
During their 75-minute meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a lasting peace for Ukraine, emphasizing the country’s sovereignty and security as crucial to European stability.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for the UK’s unwavering support, noting that he looked forward to his upcoming meeting with King Charles III.
“I want to thank the people of the United Kingdom for their tremendous support since the very beginning of this war,” Zelensky said. “We are happy that we have such a strategic partner in the UK, and we count on your continued support.”
The meeting came amid growing concerns over U.S. commitment to Ukraine following Trump’s apparent shift in policy.
