Yusuf Tuggar has resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the ministry confirmed on Monday through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Tuggar’s resignation follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu instructing all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 elections to step down by March 31. The directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) timetable for party primaries.
Speculation surrounds Tuggar’s plans to run for the Bauchi State governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in 2027.
A seasoned diplomat and policymaker, Tuggar was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister in August 2023. Born on March 12, 1967, he has a distinguished career spanning diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting.
Tuggar previously represented Gamawa Constituency in Bauchi State in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and contested the state’s governorship in two election cycles. Between 2017 and 2023, he served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, strengthening bilateral relations and trade cooperation.
As Foreign Affairs Minister, he led Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements under the Tinubu administration, shaping the country’s foreign policy priorities on the global stage.
