Operatives of the Forward Operations Base (FOB) in Bonny, Rivers State, have successfully rescued 59 individuals from a stranded dredging vessel at the mouth of the Opobo River. The Nigerian Navy’s spokesman, Aiwuyor Aliu-Adams, confirmed the rescue operation, highlighting the dangers posed by the turbulent waters at this time of year.
The vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, under contract with Sterling Global Oil Limited, was deployed at the Opobo field when it encountered trouble. Upon receiving the distress call, FOB Bonny swiftly dispatched a 10-man armed team, led by Lieutenant Commander Gideon Gwaza, in two interceptor boats.
The initial rescue attempt was hampered by strong waves, prompting the deployment of an additional squadron of three boats, along with support from Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and one Nigerian Air Force helicopter.
Despite the challenging conditions, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued. Tragically, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza lost his life during the operation.
“The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Gwaza, a well-trained combat diver whose bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty exemplify the risks undertaken by Navy personnel to ensure the safety of Nigeria’s maritime domain. His dedication will never be forgotten,” the statement read.
