Three individuals lost their lives early Monday in a devastating accident at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Gate in Lagos State. The incident, which occurred around 1 AM, involved two vehicles, with the drivers remarkably escaping without injury.
A witness on X, @Drweloveu, described the scene, stating that the drivers emerged unscathed while their friends lay deceased. “No scratch on their bodies. They came out hale and hearty, while their friends lay dead,” the user reported.
Instead of providing assistance, the police allegedly handcuffed the survivors, prompting outrage from onlookers, including local elders. Witnesses pleaded with officers to prioritize transporting the deceased to a hospital or mortuary rather than arresting those mourning their friends.
Following numerous complaints from the crowd, the police eventually released the drivers. Community members then began efforts to locate the families of the deceased.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the details. “The police arrived at the scene and took occupants of the vehicles to the hospital. Unfortunately, three were certified dead, and their bodies were transported to Yaba mortuary,” he stated.
The driver deemed at fault was also taken for medical attention and later released into the custody of his family. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
