Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has disbursed a total of ₦9,357,743,281.35 in gratuities owed to state workers since 2011. The governor initiated the payment of the backlog of gratuities in February of this year.
In a statement issued in Gusau on Saturday, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the governor’s spokesperson, detailed the payments made to retired workers. So far, ₦4,860,613,699.22 has been paid to retired state workers in nine batches, while local government workers have received ₦4,497,129,582.13.
Governor Lawal established a committee in February to verify and authenticate the records of Zamfara State pensioners who had not received their gratuities since 2011. According to the statement, 2,666 out of 3,880 verified pensioners have received their total gratuity entitlements, amounting to ₦4,860,613,699.22. These payments have been distributed to beneficiaries who retired between 2015 and 2024.
Additionally, 3,840 out of 4,804 verified retired local government and primary school teachers have received payments totaling ₦4,497,129,582.13 in nine batches. The outstanding total payable arrears for local government gratuities was ₦5,688,230,607.20, of which ₦4,497,129,582.13 has been settled to date. These payments cover those who retired between 2011 and 2021.
In summary, the state has paid a combined total of ₦9,357,743,281.35 in gratuities from a cumulative amount of ₦13,784,179,513.80 owed to 6,506 verified retired beneficiaries out of a total of 8,684 verified retirees. The beneficiaries of these payments are those who retired between 2011 and 2024.
