Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the Dangote Group, has voiced strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to shift Nigeria’s energy landscape from petroleum products to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Speaking at a recent event, Dangote noted that the company’s investments in CNG align with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060.
“We are optimistic about significant achievements under President Tinubu’s leadership in energy efficiency. This clean energy transition calls for private sector collaboration, and we are here to support this visionary shift,” Dangote remarked.
Dangote highlighted the company’s position as Nigeria’s largest CNG truck operator, viewing this commitment as bolstering Tinubu’s energy goals and enhancing the nation’s energy independence.
“With the Federal Government’s new policy launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda by His Excellency, we are now using CNG vehicles. Our commitment remains a cleaner, greener future for Nigeria,” he added.
President Tinubu underscored the critical need for Nigeria to leverage its vast natural gas reserves, particularly within the transportation sector, as a pivotal economic shift for the nation.
“Utilising natural gas for Nigeria’s transportation industry is essential. This step marks a significant shift in our public transportation and energy use,” he affirmed.
Dangote Cement has invested over $280 million in the CNG sector, reinforcing its position and reflecting its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, shared that the company plans to convert its entire fleet to CNG by mid-2026, adding that investments in CNG fueling infrastructure will ensure dependable access for its expanding fleet.
“Our Obajana CNG station, capable of refueling over 3,000 trucks, demonstrates our dedication, with a second station underway in Ibese to further support operations,” Pathak stated.
