The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) labeled as “deliberate and scripted” the fainting episodes of several minors arraigned Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja for involvement in the August 2024 End Bad Governance protest. The incident involved six suspects who reportedly collapsed as they appeared before Justice Obiora Egwuatu, drawing significant media attention.
The 75 minors, aged 12 to 15, faced ten charges including terrorism, attempting to overthrow the government, and mutiny. The police, in a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumiyowa Adejobi, asserted that the fainting was staged to attract negative media coverage, while medical aid was promptly provided to those affected.
The NPF reiterated its commitment to lawful detention practices, stressing that the minors’ rights were observed throughout the legal proceedings. ACP Adejobi noted that under Nigerian law, individuals of criminal responsibility age are subject to prosecution, aligning with global standards. He urged the public to avoid bias, assuring transparency in the case.
Later, Justice Egwuatu granted bail to 67 minors at N10 million each. Minors under 15 were required to provide a civil servant as a surety. The protesters, allegedly arrested across multiple states, face charges of treason and conspiracy under the Penal Code Act.
