President Bola Tinubu has elevated the acting Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, to the rank of Lieutenant General. The decoration ceremony took place at the President’s office, as confirmed by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga. If confirmed by the Senate, Lt. Gen. Oluyede will permanently assume the role of Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
At the ceremony, President Tinubu praised Oluyede’s record and dedication, stating, “It is both an honor and a privilege to decorate you today. This recognition reflects your commitment to the Nigerian military and your efforts in ensuring the country’s safety and stability.”
Lt. Gen. Oluyede expressed gratitude, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the vision of his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, and prioritizing peace and security nationwide.
Oluyede’s appointment was announced on October 30, 2024, amid speculation surrounding Lagbaja’s health. Onanuga clarified that Oluyede would serve as acting army chief pending Lagbaja’s return, dispelling rumors of his passing.
Prior to this role, Oluyede, 56, served as Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna, and is a member of the Nigerian Army’s 39th Regular Course. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992, he reached the rank of Major General in September 2020.
Over his career, Oluyede has held various command roles, including Platoon Commander, Commandant of the Amphibious Training School, and Staff Officer in the Guards Brigade. He has also participated in key missions, such as the ECOMOG operation in Liberia, Operation Harmony IV in Bakassi, and Operation Hadin Kai in Nigeria’s North East.
A decorated officer, Oluyede has earned several honors, including the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and Membership in the National Institute.
