The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC JV), operator of the NNPC Limited, SPDC, TotalEnergies, and Nigerian Agip Oil Company Joint Venture, has announced a donation of $1 million to support relief efforts for over 500,000 people displaced by floods in Borno State.
“The funds will be used to procure and distribute essential relief materials and medical supplies for displaced residents urgently needing aid,” said Osagie Okunbor, Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria. An experienced local NGO, in partnership with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, will coordinate the distribution.
The SPDC JV’s intervention responds to an alert from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) after severe flooding caused by Alau Dam’s overflow, and to requests for support from Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. “We believe it is our duty to assist our society in times of need,” Okunbor stated, expressing SPDC’s commitment to the victims.
Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Operating Officer of NNPC’s Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), emphasized the urgency, noting that the region’s vulnerable communities have been deeply affected. “The flooding has severely disrupted livelihoods, especially impacting women and children. We are grateful to support immediate relief and stand with the government and agencies leading recovery efforts,” Wunti said, affirming NNPC’s commitment to both immediate aid and sustainable partnerships for recovery.
