The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) branch, has suspended its planned indefinite strike following commitments by the Gombe State Government and university management to address outstanding welfare issues.
The decision was reached during a congress meeting held on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the ASUU Secretariat on the university campus.
In a resolution signed by the ASUU-GSU Chairperson, Dr. Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Dr. Aliyu Shelleng, the union said it considered communications from the Gombe State Government and university management regarding its outstanding demands.
The congress resolved to suspend the planned industrial action to allow both parties time to fulfil their commitments, particularly the implementation of the new salary scale and payment of outstanding entitlements.
The suspension is subject to the full implementation of the agreements by the end of October 2026.
ASUU warned that it would commence a total and indefinite strike without further notice if the government and university management fail to meet the agreed terms by the deadline.
The union said it also considered a letter from the Gombe State Government concerning the implementation of the new salary structure, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university management outlining a payment plan for accrued arrears and other entitlements.
Following the resolution, academic activities at Gombe State University are expected to continue without immediate disruption while the union monitors the implementation of the agreements.
