Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter, a former chief of staff in Israel’s finance ministry, as the nation’s next ambassador to the United States. “Yechiel Leiter is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu stated on Friday.
Leiter’s appointment follows the recent re-election of U.S. President Donald Trump, a leader widely celebrated in Israel for his pro-Israel stance. Leiter’s extensive background includes roles as deputy director general in the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.
Leiter, who resides in the Gush Etzion settlement area in the West Bank, has been recognized for his contributions to advocacy on behalf of Judea and Samaria. Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, an organization representing councils of Jewish settlements, welcomed Leiter’s appointment, commending him as “a key partner in English-language advocacy” for the region.
Leiter’s personal life has also been marked by service; his son tragically lost his life in the Gaza conflict last year while serving in the Israeli military.
