Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, joined the Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, for the formal opening of the University on the Niger in Umunya, Anambra State. The event, held two days ago, marked the establishment of a new citadel of learning in the region.
Speaking at the event, Obi highlighted his contributions to the establishment of the institution during his tenure as governor. He recounted his decision to return control of the land to the Church, ensuring their full autonomy over the premises.
“Yesterday, I honored the invitation of His Lord Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, to the formal opening of the University on the Niger. I rejoiced with the university community on the opening of this great citadel of learning,” Obi said.
He expressed his belief in education as the greatest investment in society and emphasized its role as a tool for development. “The land on which the university is built would not have been made available without my return of schools to missionaries over a decade ago as governor,” Obi noted.
Obi recalled his efforts to secure the land for the project, including relocating the NYSC camp from Umunya to Mbaukwu to allow the Church to use the location for educational purposes. He further revealed his initial support of ₦50 million towards the project and pledged continued assistance.
He extended gratitude to the key stakeholders who played pivotal roles in the realization of the institution, including the Primate of All Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba; Chancellor Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo; Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chinedu Nebo; and Chief Osita Chidoka, Chairman and Director of Site Completion.
Obi encouraged the students to excel in their academic journey and emphasized the transformative power of education. “Through our collective investment in education, we will transform our nation and build a New Nigeria for all. It is POssible,” he concluded.
