The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has criticized her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, for attempting to reclaim his position by forcefully entering the Assembly Complex on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists at the Lagos State High Court on Friday, where Obasa had filed a legal challenge to his removal, Meranda described his actions as “a show of shame.”
“In our job, we have numbers that form a quorum,” she said. “If you are sitting with just three or four members, you are merely putting on a theatre performance.”
The crisis in the Lagos Assembly escalated when Obasa, who represents Agege 1 Constituency, returned to the chambers with armed security operatives, insisting he was still the Speaker.
Obasa had been removed from office on January 13, 2025, and Meranda was immediately elected as his successor, becoming the first female Speaker in the state’s history. However, Obasa has maintained that due process was not followed in his removal.
“I have never been removed from office,” he asserted. “I am not against removal, but it must be done in accordance with the House rules and the Constitution.”
The legal battle over the Speakership is set to continue in court, with both factions standing firm on their claims.
