The Katsina State chapter of the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) has called on the state government to empower women through literacy education and skills development to prevent their exploitation by bandits as informants.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event held on Saturday to mark International Women’s Day 2025, the association’s chairperson, Dr. Agatha Nyam, emphasized the need to create opportunities for women’s participation in all aspects of life.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Invest in Women, Accelerate Action,” highlights the importance of addressing systemic barriers and biases that hinder women’s progress.
Dr. Nyam advocated for greater gender equality, empowerment, and justice, urging the government to collaborate with women to enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
She further called on individuals, organizations, and communities to invest in women and accelerate progress towards a more equitable society.
“Despite our tight schedules and ongoing fasting, we have gathered to mark this occasion with prayers. We will continue to pray for lasting peace, unity, and progress in our state,” she said.
Dr. Nyam emphasized the need for increased female participation in governance, development, and peacebuilding efforts.
“We want women to be included in governance, nation-building, and peace initiatives because, without peace, there can be no nation,” she noted.
During the celebration, women were encouraged to uphold moral values, avoid divisive tendencies such as sectionalism and tribalism, and remain steadfast in faith.
The event underscored the role of women in fostering national growth and stability, with a strong call for action to accelerate gender equality and inclusive development.
