Wema Bank has reiterated its commitment to advancing gender equality, financial inclusion, and women’s empowerment through innovation and technology.
Speaking at the bank’s International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 event in Lagos, themed Harnessing Innovation & Technology to Accelerate Financial Inclusion for Women, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, highlighted the bank’s impact in bridging the financial gap for women.
Since launching its women-focused initiative, SARA by Wema, in 2019, the bank has provided financial services to over 400,000 unbanked women, disbursed ₦75 billion in low-interest loans, and created over 900 jobs. Additionally, Wema Bank has facilitated market access for 3,000 women, linking them to over 135,000 customers and generating over $4 million in sales.
Oseni emphasized that women’s empowerment is integral to the bank’s identity, stating, “Since our inception in 1945, we have remained committed to inclusion, empowerment, and support for women. As we celebrate our 80th anniversary on May 2, 2025, we are more driven than ever to continue fostering gender equity and financial independence for women.”
Board Chairperson Dr. Oluwayemisi Olorunshola underscored the bank’s role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in gender equality.
“As the first female chairman of Wema Bank, my career is a testament to the impact that can be achieved when individuals and corporations take decisive steps to accelerate action for women’s empowerment,” Olorunshola said.
Wema Bank pledged to continue its efforts in empowering women and fostering financial inclusion across Nigeria.
