The city of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State came alive on Monday as it hosted the symbolic grand final flag run of MTN Champs Season 3, setting the stage for Nigeria’s biggest grassroots athletics competition. The event marked the countdown to a four-day track and field showdown slated for May 6–9 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The ceremonial flag run featured a relay through the heart of Uyo, with athletes carrying the official MTN Champs flag past prominent city landmarks—from the Government House through Wellington Bassey Way, Ring Road, Oron Road, Uyo Plaza, and culminating at the stadium. The flag was officially handed over to MTN executives by Team MVP athletes, symbolizing the start of the grand finale.
Declaring the run open, Elder Paul Bassey, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, speaking on behalf of the state government, commended the initiative:
“We identify fully with this competition aimed at nurturing and developing talents in Nigeria. We thank MTN for backing this competition and appreciate everyone making it a success.” He also urged visitors to enjoy the hospitality and cultural richness of the state.
The flag run, designed to build momentum and highlight Uyo’s vibrant culture, featured local athletes in short relays, supported by a colorful convoy that included MTN-branded vehicles, skaters performing stunts, and a music-blaring bus that electrified the city streets. The event underscored MTN Champs’ commitment to youth empowerment, sports development, and community engagement.
MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, described the competition as a transformative platform:
“MTN Champs continues to grow and inspire the future of athletics in Nigeria. We remain committed to supporting the dreams of young Nigerians through innovative products and impactful sports initiatives.”
With over 2,000 athletes expected to compete and the Team MVP contingent headlining the event, this year’s grand finale promises to be the most exciting edition yet.
