British comedian and media personality Russell Brand pleaded not guilty on Friday to five sexual offence charges, including rape, during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The 49-year-old, known for his provocative comedy and more recently for his turn as a social media influencer, faces allegations spanning from 1999 to 2005 involving four women. The charges include one count of rape, one count of oral rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault.
Brand, dressed in an open-collared shirt and dark blazer, arrived at court to a waiting crowd and entered a formal plea in the dock, where he stood flanked by two officers. He maintained a stoic expression, staring ahead as he delivered his not guilty pleas.
The Crown Prosecution Service brought the charges following a Metropolitan Police investigation launched in response to allegations first aired in a 2023 Channel 4 documentary. The programme detailed claims from several women, including former colleagues in television and radio, alleging misconduct during Brand’s time as a rising star in the UK entertainment industry.
One of the alleged incidents took place in 1999 in a hotel in Bournemouth, where Brand is accused of rape. Another woman accuses him of oral rape and sexual assault in central London in 2004. Other charges relate to incidents involving a TV employee and a radio station worker during the height of Brand’s fame.
Earlier this month, Brand appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, showing little reaction as the charges were formally presented. He was granted conditional bail and has since continued to maintain his innocence.
In a video statement posted on social media platform X in April, Brand described himself as a changed man, acknowledging past issues with substance abuse and reckless behaviour but denying any non-consensual activity.
“I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was was a rapist,” he said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to defend myself.”
Born in Essex in 1975, Brand rose to prominence as an MTV presenter and stand-up comedian before becoming a household name on British television and radio. His controversial style, however, has frequently landed him in hot water, including a notorious 2008 scandal in which he and fellow broadcaster Jonathan Ross left a lewd voicemail for actor Andrew Sachs.
Once a prominent voice on the political left and a Hollywood actor, Brand has in recent years reinvented himself as a right-wing online figure. He now commands a substantial following on social media, where he promotes anti-establishment views, wellness content, and conspiracy theories. In 2023, he publicly declared that he had become a Christian, following a baptism in the River Thames.
