The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant boost to the national power grid with the addition of 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity through projects managed under its Project Management Unit (PMU).
Speaking during a project update session, TCN General Manager of Project Coordination, Aminu Tahir, said the ongoing projects—funded by the World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), and Agence Française de Développement (AFD)—are in various stages of completion, with several already operational.
“Some of the projects are already completed while others are 80 percent done. As of now, we have added 5,910MVA to the national grid through these efforts,” Tahir said, adding that procurement processes for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) projects in Lagos and Ogun States are also nearing completion.
Meanwhile, TCN has successfully restored bulk power supply across Nigeria following the emergency reconstruction of the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi 330kV transmission line, which was earlier brought down by a windstorm.
The company deployed three contractors for the repair works. However, a second windstorm struck during repairs, toppling an additional three towers in Galadima Village, Shanga LGA of Kebbi State. Additional contractors were mobilized to fast-track emergency restoration.
“Our teams worked around the clock to ensure the line was energised at about 12:40 p.m. today,” TCN General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said in a statement. “We thank the affected communities for their patience and understanding throughout the process.”
Mbah reiterated TCN’s commitment to ensuring the stable and efficient transmission of electricity across the country.
