Tinubu Meets Economic Team Over Fiscal Woes

By Ayomide Otitoju

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday held a high-level closed-door meeting with key members of his economic and fiscal team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as part of ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.

In attendance were Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo; Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); and the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not publicly disclosed, a presidency source described it as part of routine briefings during which ministers and agency heads update the president on key developments in their portfolios.

Insiders indicated that the FIRS chairman is expected to present a roadmap for implementing the four newly signed tax reform bills, which are scheduled to take effect in January 2026. The CBN governor is also anticipated to provide an update on fiscal and monetary policy coordination, particularly with regard to inflation control and exchange rate stability.

Finance and budget officials are believed to have presented reports on Nigeria’s macroeconomic outlook and fiscal performance in the first half of the year.

The meeting comes amid ongoing reforms by the Tinubu administration to stabilise the economy, boost revenue generation, and manage public debt. Analysts say the meeting is crucial as the government prepares for the 2026 budget cycle and considers new policy directions.
