President Bola Tinubu on Monday conferred national honours on Nigeria’s Super Falcons for clinching the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
At a ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu awarded the team’s 24 players and 11 technical staff the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Each player will receive a three-bedroom apartment and the naira equivalent of $100,000, while the technical crew will get $50,000 each.
“This trophy represents the unbreakable spirit of Nigerians. You have inspired a nation,” Tinubu said, receiving the WAFCON trophy from team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Falcons, who defeated hosts Morocco 3–2 in a dramatic final, were earlier welcomed by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and several ministers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, also announced a ₦10 million donation to each player and technical crew member.
