Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to address Nigeria’s deepening political challenges.
Melaye announced his exit on Thursday via a post on his official X handle, where he shared a resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA of Kogi State. In a follow-up video, Melaye confirmed he had joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), receiving his new party membership card.
In the letter, dated July 4, 2025, Melaye said the PDP lacked “the potency and capacity to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
He added that, after careful reflection, he could no longer, in good conscience, align with the PDP’s direction or participate in its activities.
His resignation follows that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who left the party earlier in July over “irreconcilable differences.” The wave of defections signals ongoing realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
