Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the federal and state governments to address longstanding grievances or risk another strike in public universities.
In a statement signed by president Christopher Piwuna, the union cited poor welfare, inadequate funding, and failure to honour past agreements — notably the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
The warning came after Education Minister Tunji Alausa vowed universities would “never” strike again, a claim ASUU said must be matched by concrete action. The union said many lecturers teach without basic resources, struggle to pay bills, and conduct research under severe constraints.
ASUU also criticised political interference in university governance and rejected government initiatives treating academics as “volunteers” under schemes such as the “Diaspora Bridge.”
“Nigerian academics are tired of excuses,” Piwuna said, urging immediate resolution to avoid another “looming industrial crisis.”
