Africa’s path to a resilient and equitable future depends on environmental stewardship, community investment, and bold energy transitions, Sahara Group has stated in its newly released 2024 Sustainability Report.
Themed “Beyond Energy: Fostering Africa’s Sustainable Future”, the report outlines the energy and infrastructure conglomerate’s progress on inclusive, responsible energy delivery aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.
Director of Governance & Sustainability, Ejiro Gray, said the Group is scaling investments in gas infrastructure and renewable energy, implementing nature-based carbon mitigation solutions, and embedding ESG risk management across all operations. She noted the company’s 2024 milestones included over 4 million man-hours with zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI), avoidance of 612,498 kg of CO₂ emissions through recycling, recovery of 210,000 kg of recyclables, and ₦43.5 million paid to more than 1,000 waste collectors under its “Go Recycling” initiative.
Other achievements include 75,000 lives impacted through 13 social projects in 11 countries, biodiversity and reforestation projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Dubai, and the training of over 11,000 students in green entrepreneurship. The Group also allocated 3% of operational expenditure to sustainable host community development via its Host Community Development Trust.
Head of Corporate Communications, Bethel Obioma, said Sahara’s sustainability approach integrates emissions reduction, technology-driven innovation, and expansion of gas and solar energy projects. Group Head of HR, Emilomo Arorote, added that “people remain central” to the company’s sustainability agenda, with programmes in vocational training, youth empowerment, and workplace safety.
