A rally organised by the Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) descended into chaos on Sunday when suspected political thugs attacked participants at Lion Field, Alimosho.
The event, led by former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, was held to welcome Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Lagos governorship aspirant, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, into the ADC fold. It also doubled as a voter sensitisation campaign, urging residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Ca userds (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shortly after proceedings commenced, hoodlums stormed the venue, forcing participants to flee. Witnesses alleged that the attackers were loyalists of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Several people sustained injuries, while policemen at the venue were reportedly overpowered.
As of press time, the Lagos State Police Command had not confirmed any arrests.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, dismissed the allegations of involvement by his party, insisting the disruption was linked to opposition infighting.
“The opposition is certainly not helping our democracy by blaming the ruling party for their woes. The APC is committed to peace and stability in Lagos. The opposition poses no threat to us and is only seeking excuses for its imminent defeat in 2027,” Oladejo said.
He called on security agencies to safeguard political activities in the state and prevent them from being hijacked by “political jobbers.”
