The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day deadline to resolve lingering issues affecting lecturers and the education sector.
The ultimatum followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the University of Abuja.
In a statement signed by its National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU decried the government’s “persistent neglect” of the university system and failure to honor past agreements.
“If, at the end of this period, no substantial action is taken, the Union may be forced to embark on a two-week warning strike, which could be followed by a total and indefinite strike,” the statement warned.
ASUU’s demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, revitalisation funding for universities, settlement of salary arrears, and the creation of a sustainable funding model for tertiary education.
Although the Ministry of Education had set up a committee led by Permanent Secretary Abel Enitan to engage with ASUU, its recommendations are yet to be made public.
