The Sokoto State Government has donated more than ₦100 million and 408 bags of assorted food items to families affected by banditry and a boat accident in Dinawa, Birjingo and Gorau communities in Wurno and Goronyo Local Government Areas.
The donation was disclosed during condolence visits by a state government delegation led by the state All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.
In Dinawa, families of seven people killed in the incident received ₦1 million each, alongside two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice.
Five injured victims were also given ₦250,000 each and one bag each of rice, millet and maize.
In Birjingo, families of three deceased victims received ₦1 million each, as well as two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice.
In Gorau, families of the victims of the boat accident were presented with ₦1 million each, two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice.
Wamakko, who condoled with the affected communities on behalf of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, described the incidents as unfortunate and expressed sadness over the loss of lives.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to prevent a recurrence and said the state government would continue to support security agencies in their efforts to protect residents.
The boat accident occurred in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area, when a boat carrying 77 passengers, including farmers, women and children, reportedly capsized shortly after leaving the community.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that at least 46 bodies had been recovered, while 15 passengers were rescued alive.
The government said the intervention was aimed at supporting affected families following the loss of their loved ones and the impact of the incidents on the communities.
