The Kogi State Government has pledged to intensify safety measures on its waterways following a boat accident on the River Niger that claimed at least 26 lives.
In a statement on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and directed relevant agencies, including the State Emergency Management Agency, to provide immediate support and relief to those affected.
The Governor further assured that the state would work closely with federal agencies to enhance safety protocols and prevent future tragedies. He urged Nigerian citizens, particularly those in riverine communities, to prioritise safety by avoiding overloading vessels and using life jackets and other precautionary measures during water travel.
“The Government of Kogi State stands with the people of Ibaji LGA and will continue to support them through this difficult time,” the statement added.
