Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, continues to demonstrate political strength and public support, even as former governor Peter Obi faces criticism for attempts to challenge Soludo’s authority, according to the state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor.
Mefor described reports portraying Soludo as threatened by Obi as misleading, noting that the incumbent governor enjoys widespread backing from the people and a record of effective governance. “Governor Soludo has proved that Anambra is in excellent hands,” Mefor said, highlighting Soludo’s overwhelming victory in the November 8 gubernatorial election, where he secured 73% of the vote and won all 21 local government areas—a feat unprecedented in the state’s electoral history.
The Commissioner noted that Soludo has extended goodwill to Obi in the past, including allowing him to use the Anambra State Government House to announce his presidential ambition and supporting his use of the APGA platform. However, Obi’s camp reportedly sought to unseat Soludo following the 2023 presidential election, attempting to leverage the Labour Party to challenge Soludo’s mandate.
Mefor said Soludo’s record as a globally recognised former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, as well as his national honours including the CFR award, underscores his leadership credentials and strategic acumen, surpassing that of Obi, who remains a former state governor.
The Commissioner emphasised that despite political provocations, Soludo remains focused on governance and development, cautioning that Obi should “keep to his lane” to avoid unnecessary confrontation. Mefor added that public support and election results confirm that Soludo, nicknamed “Man Wey No Dey Fear Work,” commands both the political and grassroots advantage in Anambra State.
Observers note that Soludo’s consistent electoral success and administrative performance place him in a distinct position of authority, reinforcing his ability to steer the state while navigating political challenges from former colleagues and opponents.
