CBN Hosts First-Ever IILM Governing Board Meeting in Nigeria

By Ayomide Otitoju

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), under the leadership of Governor Olayemi Cardoso, has hosted the 35th Governing Board Meeting of the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM) at its headquarters in Abuja—the first time the statutory session is being held in Nigeria.

The meeting coincides with Governor Cardoso’s tenure as Chair of the IILM Governing Board and underscores Nigeria’s expanding role in global Islamic finance, particularly in the development of non-interest financial markets.

Top central banking officials from Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nigeria, Qatar, Türkiye, the UAE and the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) convened to review the corporation’s 2025 performance and outline strategic priorities for international liquidity management.

Nigeria’s 2025 chairmanship has recorded notable gains, including improved sukuk issuances, increased investor participation and the strengthening of liquidity instruments for Islamic financial institutions.

As part of the activities, the CBN also organized a capacity-building workshop on Islamic liquidity management for the country’s non-interest banking segment, aimed at deepening technical expertise and advancing market growth.

By hosting the meeting, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a more inclusive global financial architecture while enhancing investor confidence in its rapidly evolving non-interest finance sector
